Myanmar: Eye Care Project
Myanmar (Birmanie) / Myanmar, Rhakine State, Thandwe & Yangon
Main purpose : Many people in Myanmar are blind due to preventable or reversible reasons. The number of trained ophthalmologists is small though, and they are underrepresented especially in regional settings. The project sends out volunteers twice a year to provide particularly cataract surgeries free of charge as an immediate support. In regard to long term development, the provision of adequate equipment to the partner hospital and cooperation with local surgeons play a vital role. In addition, in cooperation with the University of Yangon, teaching and training of ophthalmology students is another important aspect of the project.

Support of the Midwifery School in Lomé
Togo / Togo, Lomé
Main purpose : The number of maternal deaths is still very high in Togo and midwives, who play a vital role to secure a safe birth in the absence of doctors, are scarce. The project supports the national midwifery school in Lomé in regard to needs identified by them. These include the renovation of parts of the building and provision of lacking teaching materials and equipment to improve the learning and living conditions at the school. Furthermore, the project will provide scholarships for selected women who otherwise would not be able to afford the training.
